A quick bit before I get into the post, everything I share below is a method of self care. To many of you it may seem that logically I feel better because of those reasons and not because of magical ones. And to that I say it is surely possible. However I would like to say in defense of the magical elements of this post that when I exclude them from the self care elements the results are not nearly so potent for myself (be that a psychological reason or magical one). Ultimately it is up to you to decide what to pursue.
The ritual can be broken down into three simple parts: Cleanse, Consume, and Cease.
To Cleanse:
✨A shower is ideal.
✨Turn off the lights and open the window.
✨If it’s night time a few candles (in containers is safer but I’ve used tealights without issue)
✨A body scrub (exfoliating is good DO NOT USE MICROBEADS THEY ARE TERRIBLE FOR THE ENVORINMENT.)
✨Typical shower items
✨Freshly washed towel
✨Moody Music (I listened to Eivør and Faun and Omnia for this myself)
✨Red Yarn
✨While in the shower imagine your body is coated in a thick, black tar. Starting from your head peel (yes physically) the tar from the top of your head down.
✨The more you “struggle” the better I feel the results tend to be. Really tear at the stuff and work your way all the way down to your feet. Once the last bit is torn off and down the drain wash up really well. Pay attention to lather in especially sore or achey areas.
✨I focus in grounding and even on light trance work in the shower. If you are uncomfortable by this you can avoid it. I clear my mind and sit in the floor eventually working into a position where my forehead touches the floor (child’s pose).
✨After this it is important to get up slowly, I’ve gotten really dizzy from standing up too quickly in the shower before.
✨While I towel dry I dance around the bathroom, snuffing candles out until I’m left in silence and darkness.
✨At this point I do daily grooming things but pay attention to how. Lotion and toner is applied with thought and consideration. Slowly building up these methods of care as a means of replacing what was lost and washed away. Though, care, and energy is important when repairing after cleansing. If you like you can encorperate sigil work (amulet work/ talisman work to some) into this aspect of the ritual.
To Consume
✨Cook yourself some simple and yummy food. Don’t make anything too heavy but indulge in foods rich in color and that make you feel better.
✨Often I cook eggs, jams and breads, and honey covered cakes and things of that nature. Meat is also a good choice.
✨ Season with strong protection or warding foods such as garlic, honey, rosemary, thyme, salt, lemon and so on.
✨Settle down with something stimulating but also that you enjoy like a favorite song or book. Nourishing yourself is more than simply eating food.
✨If you fancy it a nice walk or a quick trip out is also a good method of clearing your mind.
To Cease:
✨Make up your bed and make sure you sleep with iron under or above the bed (I sleep with a throwing axe).
✨Before you go to sleep tie a red yarn around your neck (loose enough to not harm you but tight enough not to snag while you sleep).
✨Wear the yarn for the duration of the next day and at nightfall cut it off and burn it. Dispose of the ashes in running water or at a crossroads.
These steps have never failed me so I offer them to do with as you will. The thing with rituals is you must repeat them so this is something that requires monthly maintenance at the very least in order to remain effective.

Writing a historical novel means knowing how far they can travel on a horse, This is good info right here.

But how long does it take on a dragon?

Look, there are certain elements of realism that a modern fantasy novel requires, and this is not one of them
Just a quick note in case y’all aren’t aware: I’m seeing a lot of these “(location) Gothic” posts going around, and they’re cool and I’m totally into this, but please be aware that Southern Gothic is not about weirdness for the sake of weirdness. Southern Gothic uses the grotesque and surreal elements of gothic literature to explore, highlight, and engage with the very real tragedies of the South, including racism, classism, poverty, religion, the decay of the antebellum way of life, the insistence on clinging to absurd and empty traditions as a way of clinging to that past, the glorification of the antebellum past, family ties and customs, military service, etc.
Which is all to say that Southern Gothic is social critique. I don’t know the rest of the country well enough to say if that’s what’s going on in all these cool posts, but I wanted to point it out in case it hadn’t been spelled out clearly yet ^^
When it comes to elemental witches, it is more of a ecological connection the witch is making with there surroundings, or there connections with the elements. This does not mean that someone who is away from the ocean can’t work with the ocean. There are no limitations with elemental magic. A person can be more than one element or a combination.

cinderella marries the prince
and it’s… fine. The prince is great! They’re in love, he’s very sweet and passionate, writing her poems and songs, giving her anything she wants. The time she spends with her husband is great.
but cinderella is not royalty, her family was noble but she never spent time in those circles. She’s used to being busy, she’s used to cooking and cleaning and mending. There are hours, days, where she has nothing to do.
time passes. cinderella learns the fancy lady type of needlework. Learns to ride horses. Reads a lot.
as is normal for royalty at the time, they travel and are hosted by nobles or stay at castles owned by the king. But even that variety begins to become routine. The prince is distracted, there’s a lot of young women living and working on their route. Daughters of nobles. Younger and prettier with soft hands that have never done a day’s work.
cinderella needs something to spend her time on, and there’s a part of her thinking a couple-only trip might get her husband’s attention again, so she suggests making an old castle that’s fallen into disrepair their “project.” It was built in the time when castles were made to be defensible, so it’s quite sturdy, but it’s overgrown and secluded. The prince doesn’t know why his family stopped living there either. A hundred years ago it was their summer home.
so they go. And they work. And for a while it’s great! But when they leave for winter cinderella’s husband forgets her once again. cinderella resolves to make the best of her life and stop worrying about a man who has gotten what he wanted from her.
summer comes again and this time cinderella goes alone to the old castle (minus staff, of course, but cinderella manages to narrow it down to only repair workers and one maid). She can cook and clean and mend again, but this time it’s her own choice. She is happy.
this summer they make more progress on repairs. The workers say that most of it can be salvaged, except one tower that’s been completely overgrown with vines and briars. It will have to come down, eventually, but for now it can be safely ignored.
cinderella has more free time now. The old castle has a surprisingly untouched library, though time and moisture have damaged many of the books. Behind a collection of greek poetry cinderella finds an old diary. Very old, in fact, at least a hundred years. It’s rude to read a diary, of course, but whoever wrote this is long dead, and cinderella is bored, so…
from the description of activities the author looks to have been nobility. Maybe even a princess. She’s sensitive and sweet and smarter than she seems to realize. If circumstances had been different cinderella wishes they could have been friends…
after the summer ends cinderella returns to her husband. He’s spending a lot of time with a young musician and cinderella can’t even work up the energy to care. She does some research about the castle and the family she’s married into, finds out the name of the princess who wrote the diary.
aurora. Cursed and forgotten. She died young, they say, in a plague that also took out the castle staff and her own parents. Luckily they avoided a succession crisis, but not so lucky for the dead.
time passes. cinderella goes to the old castle again and again, even out of season. Soon enough all that remains to be done is the old tower, and the builders say they should tear it down and fill the gaps before it gets cold.
one night cinderella is restless. The princess from the diary had been fond of that tower, and cinderella is far more attached to a dead woman than she ought to be. She gets out of bed, reads by candlelight, and finally goes to walk the empty halls.
she finds herself going to the tower. Pushing past the vines that don’t seem so troublesome really. They almost part before her. The stairs are perfectly intact, the door at the top is already cracked open. As if she should have done this years ago, cinderella steps into aurora’s bedroom.
she’s as beautiful as the stories say. And sitting under her hands, crossed across her stomach as it rises and falls, is a book of greek poetry.
years later, people will tell the story of cinderella as a cautionary one. Don’t seek above your station. Don’t marry for prestige. After all, a girl who grew up as a servant once married the crown prince, and disappeared after only three years. She ran away, they say, she couldn’t handle the lifestyle.
two old women who run a bookshop together agree with the lesson. Marrying for the wrong reasons never ends well. It’s best to wait for someone you have things in common with, shared interests.
or, failing that, the more linguistic of the two says, wait a decade or ten for someone to fall in love with you from your diary.
her partner laughs and hits her with the socks she is mending.
